Sample Itinerary:
World War II Symposium and Scientific Exploration
Day 1 - ST.PETERSBURG
Early afternoon arrival in St. Petersburg. Transfer to Hotel Okhtinskaya,
check in. Short introduction to this beautiful city by bus. The tour will
take you to Kazan Cathedral, the Admiralty, Fontanka, Canal Griboyedova, the
Palace Square, Winter Palace, Summer Gardens and other remarkable buildings.
Afterwards, enjoy an energetic folk performance by the Nevsky Folk Ensemble
followed by dinner in the Tschaikovsky Restaurant with tea drinking
ceremony.
Day 2 - ST.PETERSBURG
Visit a Russian church to see, but especially to hear, part of the Orthodox
Liturgy, then spend the rest of the morning being dazzled by the collection
in the legendary Hermitage Museum. Lunch followed by free time at the flea
market. Dinner in the legendary Literary Café, memorable for its ambience,
food and historical importance. Afterwards, we conclude the evening with a
concert (either ballet, orchestra or circus depending on availability).
Day 3 - ST.PETERBURG-OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO IVANOVO
Load luggage onto the bus, then discover more impressive sights in this
"Venice of the North". You will see the elegant buildings on the Nevsky
Prospect along the Neva River and charming canals and narrow streets that
might remind you of the best European traditions. There will be time for a
little more shopping here before visiting Yusupov Palace, complete with
Rasputin Murder Museum. After a late lunch we proceed to the train station
to board the overnight train to Ivanovo. Dinner on the train.
Day 4 & 5 - IVANOVO - WWII SYMPOSIUM & SCIENCE PROGRAM
Arrive early in the morning in Ivanovo, where you’ll be met by your hosts
and taken to their homes to freshen up before proceeding to the school for
program sessions. Evening in the homes. Both of these days will be devoted
to conference activities and special programs, besides becoming acquainted
with life in a provincial Russian town. Disco in the evening of day 5.
Day 6 - IVANOVO-SUZDAL-MOSCOW
Bring luggage to school for departure via bus. Make a delightful lunch stop
with tour of the Pokrovsky Monastery in Suzdal, one of the jewels in the
Golden Ring of Ancient Russian Cities. Proceed to Moscow, to the Hotel
Izmailovo, check in.
Day 7 - MOSCOW
After breakfast, tour of the famous Moscow Metro, to see its most beautiful
stations. Then we go inside the Kremlin, Moscow’s fortress and birthplace of
the city in 1147, covering 69 acres. The main landmarks are the three
Cathedrals of the Assumption, Annunciation and Archangel, dating back to the
15-16th centuries. The Armory is famous for its stunning collection of
treasures accumulated over the centuries by the Russian State and Church.
The collection is known for its royal regalia, Faberge Easter eggs, the 800
diamond throne of Tsar Alexey, the jewel-studded and sable-trimmed gold Cap
of Monomakh worn for coronations for two centuries, the coronation dresses
of the 18th century empresses and the sleigh in which Elizabeth rode from
St. Petersburg to Moscow for her coronation pulled by 23 horses. In the
middle of it all is, of course, the Great Kremlin Palace – the official
residence of the Russian president. After lunch, time for a little shopping
in the elegant passageways of the GUM Department Store. Evening cultural
opportunity (circus or concert) to be announced.
Day 8 - MOSCOW
This day is free to visit the Izmailovsky Art Market, famous for its folk
arts and its folks. Then we proceed to the airport for the departure flight.
